What does the shahada mean?

The declaration of faith at the heart of becoming Muslim, explained plainly.

The words

The shahada is commonly rendered: “There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” It is the testimony of faith and expresses Islam's core commitments.

The first part affirms worship of one God. The second affirms Muhammad's prophethood and message.

Meaning matters

The declaration is not merely a phrase to repeat without understanding. If you are considering Islam, learn what the words mean and ask questions about belief and practice.

The Quran calls people to know and worship God; it also says there is no compulsion in religion (2:256). A sincere decision should not be coerced.

A personal and communal step

Many people say the shahada with witnesses at a mosque, which can offer welcome and support. The essential matter is sincere belief; community practice around witnessing can vary.

A local knowledgeable Muslim can explain what happens and help you decide at your own pace.
