Do Muslims have to memorize the Quran?

Complete memorization of the Quran is highly encouraged but not obligatory for every Muslim. What is required is learning enough to pray (the opening chapter Al-Fatiha and some short chapters). However, memorizing the Quran (becoming a Hafiz) is one of the most honored achievements in Islam. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it" (Bukhari 5027). Allah made it easy to memorize: "We have made the Quran easy for remembrance" (54:17). Muslims who memorize it receive special status in Paradise and can intercede for family members. Even memorizing and applying one verse brings great reward. The Quran should be recited daily with understanding, whether memorized or read. Regular recitation, even small portions, connects the heart to Allah's guidance.
